Judges 9:26

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

Shechem is a very ancient place where Jacob stopped when he returned from Padan-aram to Canaan. Abimelech, the son of Gideon's maid, caused Gideon's sons to be slain so that he might become ruler of Israel, and Shechem was utterly destroyed by him. After three years of Abimelech's rule, the men of Shechem who had made him king became disgusted with his tyranny and turned to treachery and revolt against him.

Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers to Shechem, and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. Their discord and rebellion fulfilled Jotham's words. In the setting of Jotham's parable, their choice shows the folly of making ruler a man whose ambition and conduct showed he was unfit to lead. The verse belongs to the record of Israel's backsliding from God and the resulting suffering and oppression.
