Judges 9:54
Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died. Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
Abimelech was the son of Gideon's maidservant, who slew his brothers, Gideon's sons, and destroyed Shechem in order to make himself ruler of Israel. He hired vain and light persons as his followers, and Jotham's parable condemns the folly of the men of Shechem in choosing such a man as ruler.
At Thebez he was mortally wounded by a millstone, a piece of a millstone cast by a woman, and he hastily ordered his young armor-bearer to draw his sword and slay him because he did not want men to say a woman had slain him. The young man thrust him through, and he died. His death in this way was the end of his violent rule and part of the punishment for his crimes.
His order to his armor-bearer stands alongside Saul's suicide and Zimri's death by fire as an instance of a wounded man ordering another to finish him. Those doing valuable work for the Lord have no desire to rule over their brethren, and ambition to be exalted over others shows a person is wholly unfit to rule.
