Lamentations 1:17

Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.

Lamentations 1:17 belongs to the account of grief and ruin that overtook Jerusalem and Judah, calamities Jeremiah had foretold as inevitable. It portrays Jerusalem as isolated with none to comfort her amid suffering brought upon God's apostate people. By the Lord's command, Jacob's adversaries were set round about him, so that Jerusalem was surrounded.

Among them Jerusalem is as an unclean, menstruous woman among the nations. The verse is part of Israel's funeral song, the last song the nation sang even in a foreign land. It marks the end of Israel's former glory, which never returned, serving as a dirge for a once mighty nation.
