Lamentations 1:18

The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

Lamentations 1:18 belongs to a sad funeral song commemorating the suffering that came upon Jerusalem's apostate people, a lament for the nation's downfall and captivity. It acknowledges that the Lord is righteous and that Jerusalem's and Judah's suffering follows rebellion against his commandment. It calls all peoples to hear and behold and witness Jerusalem's sorrow. It portrays that sorrow as its virgins or young women and its young men going into captivity, taken and carried away. It belongs to the last song Israel sang in a foreign land, after which its former glory never returned.
