Jeremiah Weeps Over Ruined Jerusalemby emmanuel_higgins

Lamentations 1:2

She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.

The weeping woman is Jerusalem in the time of the Babylonian captivity, after the destruction of Zion and the carrying captive of Judah. She is pictured as a bereaved and grieving woman who weeps bitterly in the night. Her tears upon her cheeks and her having none to comfort her show the depth of her sorrow.

Her lovers are the nations and allies she once relied on, who have now abandoned her. Her friends are former friends who dealt treacherously with her by abandonment and betrayal. They have become her enemies, so that she is left altogether without comfort.
