Lamentations 1:22
Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint. Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
The verse stands within the book's mournful lament over Jerusalem's ruin. It is part of Israel's funeral song. That lament gives voice to sorrow and pleads for the wickedness of enemies to be brought before God to be dealt with as Jerusalem was dealt with for its transgressions.
It belongs to the last song sung by the people in a strange land. As such it serves as a dirge for a nation. Its mourning marks a former glory that never returned.
