Lamentations 1:3
Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
Lamentations 1:3 stands within a sad account of the severe suffering that came upon the people of Jerusalem after they turned away from God. That suffering included going into captivity under affliction and heavy servitude, dwelling among the heathen without rest, and being overtaken by persecutors between the straits. The verse belongs to Israel's funeral song of captivity, sung as a nation in a strange land. It was the last song of that kind, for after that captivity its former glory never returned.
