Lamentations 1:4
The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
The verse portrays Jerusalem in the aftermath of its fall, when Judah had been carried away captive. Its highways toward Zion grieve because pilgrims no longer travel them to keep the appointed solemn feasts. All its gates stand desolate and empty, while its priests sigh and its young women are bowed down with affliction. The city itself remains in bitterness, mourning the broken worship and communal life that once filled it.
