Lamentations 2:20

Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

The verse is a prophecy that mothers in Jerusalem would eat their own children. That horror was fulfilled at the destruction of Jerusalem, when starvation and suffering of every kind came upon the city. In that extremity the Jews remembered Christ's words in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, and the fulfillment opened its meaning to them. Their suffering was not arbitrarily imposed but brought upon themselves by proud resistance to the Redeemer.
