Lamentations 2:21
The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied. The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied.
Lamentations 2:21 is a sad song commemorating the awful suffering that came upon the apostate people of God, the inhabitants of Jerusalem. It pictures the young and the old lying dead on the ground in the streets, fallen by the sword. That slaying took place in the day of divine anger, in which there was killing without pity.
The calamity brought death to every age together, so that the young and the old perished together. Neither youth nor old age shielded anyone from the consequences of sin.
Its account of tribulation under the Babylonians is comparable to the later destruction of Jerusalem. The Jews had already suffered such tribulation under the Babylonians, so that destruction was not the uniquely greatest tribulation foretold in Matthew 24.
