They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Jeremiah declared that compassions do not fail but are made new every morning because faithfulness is great when he was called to drink the cup of tribulation and sorrow and was tempted in misery to say his strength and hope had perished from the Lord, and by recalling past providences in his behalf he triumphed over despair. It is of the Lord's mercies that His people are not consumed, because His compassion fails not but is new every morning, for great is His faithfulness. His mercies are renewed every morning and His faithfulness does not fail.
The renewal is not morning only but multiplied fresh every morning and new every evening, for He daily loads with benefits and crowns with lovingkindness and tender mercies. The Lord is good and greatly to be praised for them, including in daily gifts such as restful sleep. These morning mercies are blessings from His bounteous hand and tokens of His loving care in the fresh glories of each new day. They include the beauty of nature in mountains, sparkling streams, fertile valleys, lakes, rivers, the ocean, dew and rain, purifying breezes, and the sun marking day and night and giving light, warmth, and growth, as well as constant refreshment, protection, and the love of Jesus surrounding people.
They are given to promote happiness and should awaken praise in the heart. His faithful care also gives blessings in disguise, inconveniences suited to the needs of fallen humanity that stir the use of God-given ability and develop patient industry, perseverance, and courage. This continual mercy extends toward those gone away from His ordinances and neglecting righteous principles, and it is the ground for proclaiming return with the promise of return, giving reproofs, warnings, and instruction through messengers to correct wrong in the churches even when self-vindication answers asking wherein return is needed. His faithfulness is seen in patience and mercy toward sinners in bearing long with them, warning them, and working through hardship and loss to lead them to repentance and the Saviour.
When they heed the warnings and set their hearts in order He makes their way plain, while judgment follows if they remain fruitless despite His efforts. The daily renewed mercy is the ground for taking the Lord as a portion, hoping in Him, and quietly waiting for His salvation as one who waits for Him and seeks Him. These daily mercies leave people dependent on Him and call for continual remembrance and acknowledgment of dependence with gratitude, praise, and thankfulness for His care, gifts, and favors. Appreciating salvation awakens gratitude and guides the heart in the way of peace.
All obligation to serve God is grounded on redemption, and obligation is stronger and more numerous now than ever because debt to God daily increases through new favors conferred. Because of this daily mercy, natural appetites must be kept under control, and eating, dressing, and working must be done as those obligated to God and bound to glorify Him in all things. God's faithfulness is renewed day by day in the constant mercies and blessings that surround people.
