Lamentations 3:32

But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

Though He cause grief, yet will He have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. The verse reveals the tenderness of His love. His grief-bringing discipline does not cancel His compassion, abandon His people, or cast them off forever.

He does not afflict or grieve willingly, for His affliction is not vindictive, not delighted in, and not for its own sake, as the next verse explains. He permits grief when necessary to help people recognize their dependence on Him. In Israel's famine, the grief was meant to turn the people from idolatry, awaken repentance, and keep them from passing beyond the boundary of forgiveness. Even in severe sorrow and chastening, sufferers can trust that their Father sees their pain and deals with them in mercy.

As an abundant promise, it is given to forever end all murmuring, doubting, distrust, faint-heartedness, and discouragement. Distrust and faint-heartedness displease God. It is to be believed as real and appropriated in unwavering faith.
