Lamentations 3:48

Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Lamentations 3 is built so that each Hebrew letter begins a group of three verses. That carefully ordered form stands within a book marked by mental anguish.

The verse expresses deep grief over the destruction of the people, pictured as tears flowing in rivers of water. It is grief over the destruction of the people of Judah, pictured as tears flowing like rivers. It is grief over both the destruction and the suffering of the people of Judah, pictured as tears flowing like rivers. It is Jeremiah's deep grief over the destruction of his people, with tears flowing abundantly as he mourns their calamity.
