Lamentations 3:6

He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

Lamentations is a mournful book concerning the sorrows and ruin foreseen for Jeremiah's people, and this verse belongs to it. The dead are in dark places, as those who have been dead for a long time. To be set among them is to be placed in deep desolation, expressing the burdened heart's sorrow and hopelessness.

That darkness is the condition of the dead generally, without distinction of moral character, not a state in which some of the dead are already in heaven and others in hell. This darkness of the burdened heart comes before a promised morning of consolation.
