Lamentations 4:12
The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem. The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
The entrance of the adversary and the enemy into the gates of Jerusalem was so unlikely and startling that the kings of the earth and all the inhabitants of the world would not have believed it could take place. The wonder was that hostile forces should actually penetrate the gates of a city deemed secure from such capture.
The standing of Jerusalem as God's city gave it no exemption once His law was disregarded. The people's own feeling of safety likewise failed to shield them when they set that law aside. The entry of the enemy into the gates and the destruction of the city came as the consequence of their disobedience, even though Jeremiah had warned them in advance.
