Lamentations 5:14

The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.

The book is Lamentations, written by Jeremiah, God's prophet in Jerusalem, in poetic Hebrew acrostics. It was spoken after the foretold enemy came. Jeremiah joined himself to the wicked people in common cause and sympathy, feeling for the orphan, the fatherless, and the widow, rather than telling them their stubbornness and sin had brought ruin on themselves.

It laments the reproach that has come upon the people. The elders have stopped gathering at the gate for counsel and judgment, and the young men have stopped their music. For this the heart is faint and the eyes are dim.
