Lamentations 5:3

We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.

The verse belongs to the lament of the captives in Babylon over the reproach that had come upon them. That lament grieves the loss of their inheritance and the passing of their houses to strangers. It grieves fatherlessness and widowhood, the bearing of their fathers' iniquities, and subjection to the rule of servants. It grieves faint hearts and dim eyes.

It describes the people of Jerusalem in captivity as bereft of fathers and therefore without the protection and support that fathers give. Their mothers are left as widows.

It stands joined to the confession that God remains forever, with His throne from generation to generation. It stands joined to the plea that He not forget and forsake them forever, but turn them to Himself and renew their days as of old.
