Lamentations 5:6

We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.

The verse depicts a people driven by hunger to place themselves in dependence upon Egypt and Assyria. Giving the hand is an act of submission and pledged allegiance to those foreign powers. That submission was made in exchange for food, accepting servitude as the price of supply. The aim was simply to obtain bread enough to satisfy hunger.
