Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.
The verse belongs to a prayer that lays the condition of the people before the Lord, asking Him to remember and consider what has come upon them. Within that prayer it states the reproach of Judah in Babylonian captivity, that servants have gained rule over them with no one to deliver them out of their hand. The same lament sets forth that their inheritance was turned to strangers and their houses to aliens, that they were left as fatherless orphans and as widows, and that they bore the iniquities of their sinful fathers. Because of this their heart grew faint and their eyes grew dim.
The lament then turns to the Lord who remains forever, whose throne endures from generation to generation. It pleads for Him to turn His people unto Himself so that they shall be turned, and to renew their days as of old.
