Lamentations 5:9

We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

Lamentations 5:9 describes the danger and hardship of getting food during the devastation of Jerusalem, when bread was obtained only by risking life because of the sword in the wilderness. The word rendered lives translates the Hebrew neh-phesh, which can mean life or lives. The verse shows that the true prophets had to obtain food at the risk of their lives because of danger from the wilderness, and that danger was part of the misery that followed rejection of the commandments of God, when the people listened to false prophets while the true prophets faced peril.

The verse still holds true, for bread is still gotten with peril of life, labor brings no rest, water is drunk for money and wood is sold, fields are barren, crops wither and rain fails despite great dams and irrigating ditches, and hundreds of thousands continually take their lives in their hands to earn a livelihood for themselves and their families. This dangerous struggle for food is not from God but is the scar of the curse, sown by Satan as the enemy of God and man and reaped by man and the earth.
