Leviticus 13:1 opens the law given for dealing with suspected cases of leprosy. Under that law the priests were charged to examine the person brought before them and to determine whether the disease was actually present. Anyone whom they declared to be a leper was pronounced unclean and was cut off by isolation from family and from the congregation.
