Priest Releases a Bird to Cleanse a Healed Leperby emmanuel_higgins

Leviticus 14:6

As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water:

The prescription belongs to the Mosaic ceremonial ritual law for one healed of leprosy, requiring the cleansed person to bring the prescribed purification offering to the priest. That law called for the priest to examine him and declare whether he was free of the disease. This public confirmation of cleansing restored him to family and friends and to community and social life.

Jesus directed the healed leper to go and present the offering Moses commanded, thereby affirming and respecting the law God gave through Moses. His direction showed that His work and teaching were not opposed to the law of Moses or the Jewish code. Obedience to that requirement served as public testimony and evidence to the priests of the man's cure and of Christ's divine power to heal.

The ceremony was a shadowy type whose full meaning became clear when type met antitype in Christ's death. The living bird dipped with cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop in the blood of the bird killed over running water and then released symbolizes the atonement. In it Christ's death is joined to His resurrection and life. The blood signifies pardon, and the running water signifies the ever-present cleansing power of Christ's blood to cleanse people from sin.
