Leviticus 15:32

This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith;

This is a summary statement belonging to the instruction dealing with various forms of uncleanness, specifically the laws regulating uncleanness and bodily discharges whose subject is ritual uncleanness. It identifies two cases: the law for a man with an abnormal discharge and the law for one whose emission of semen made him ceremonially unclean. The regulations functioned as a simple system of cleanliness and isolation intended to prevent infectious disease from spreading. Those who touched the patient or his bed or utensils had to wash and remain apart until evening, and the patient after recovery had to complete seven days of cleansing and wash in running water.

The laws made people and things visibly clean before the sanctuary's cleansing with blood, showing that physical uncleanness had to be removed before the sanctuary could undergo its real cleansing. They are mighty object-lessons given to emphasize everywhere the exceeding sinfulness of sin, standing alongside the laws concerning leprosy as a fitting type of sin. The verse is included in the yearly round of Levitical sanctuary services, which typified Christ's once-for-all ministry in the heavenly sanctuary.

The verse must be read remembering that all the sacrifices were types of Jesus Christ and all the slain beasts pointed forward to the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. Seeing Him in these laws and regulations keeps the reading from being dry and wearisome and makes dry details full of life and a blessing to the reader. The cleansing instructions are a pattern for health reform for becoming clean and preparing the body as a dwelling place for God's Spirit. The lesson is not to abandon such cleansing truths as Israel did, but to practice temperance and be prepared to receive the latter rain.
