Leviticus 19:31

Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Regard not, turn not to, seek not after, consult not, deal not with, or have communion with mediums, wizards, sorcerers, and all who claim contact or communication with familiar spirits or the spirits of the dead. The prohibition was given to deliver Israel from the abominations of the idolatrous nations around them that wrought havoc, standing together with the prohibitions against sacrificing to Moloch and causing sons and daughters to pass through the fire. To seek such powers defiles the seeker and turns the person from the Lord. Such dealing is an abomination to God, solemnly forbidden under penalty of death in the Hebrew law.

The supposed spirits of the dead are not the dead at all, but evil angels, spirits of devils, impersonating the dead. Communion with them is intercourse with evil powers that corrupts the mind with demoralizing influence and exposes people to Satan's falsehood. Modern Spiritualism is a revival in new form and disguise of the witchcraft condemned and prohibited of old, claiming the same familiar spirits once claimed among the Hebrews. Though witchcraft is now held in contempt and intercourse with evil spirits regarded as a fable of the Dark Ages, Spiritualism counts its converts by the millions, has entered scientific circles and churches, and finds favor with legislators and kings.

The command given to ancient Israel still binds God's people in this age and remains profitable today. They are to have no part in these practices but to sanctify themselves, be holy, and keep His statutes and do them, for He is the Lord their God who sanctifies them. Instead of turning to spirits, people are to trust God however perplexing the situation, and seek Him and His counsel. They are to test all teaching by His law and testimony, and to trust implicitly and follow faithfully the instruction of His word as the only safety from curiosity about Spiritualism and enslavement by the deceiver.

God has given sufficient light so that none need be deceived by the lying claims of Spiritualism. For the dead know not anything, their thoughts have perished, they have no part in anything done under the sun and know nothing of earthly joys and sorrows. Refusing familiar spirits belongs to loathing sin and purging evil. Those who wash their robes of character white in the blood of the Lamb will be guided by Him who died to redeem them and, clothed with His own righteousness, will be given a place in His everlasting kingdom.
