Leviticus 21:7

They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

The verse places limits on whom a priest may marry because he is holy to his God, making his consecrated standing the ground for requiring purity in his life and service. That marriage restriction belongs to the wider rule that those who ministered in the sanctuary had to be pure and holy, since their work brought them into close connection with God.

Because God's holiness and purity have not changed, ministers of Jesus must likewise be holy and pure and deeply pious. They should be persons of experience and deep piety who exert a holy influence wherever they are.
