Leviticus 22:32

Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

God's name and all His attributes must be treated with reverence as part of worship and devotion. He is to be hallowed and not profaned or scorned.

He brought Israel out of Egypt to hallow them and to be their God, and therefore styles Himself the God of Israel. In taking them as His peculiar treasure He formally and publicly espoused them to Himself by giving them Himself, His Sabbath, and His law. Israel was honored by being entrusted with the Sabbath and the law with the charge to keep them and hand them down.

By becoming the God of Israel neither He nor His Sabbath nor His law became Jewish, just as entrusting Israel with them did not make them Jewish. The Creator does not become Jewish, the Sabbath remains the Sabbath of the Lord, and the law remains the law of the Most High. His giving of Himself, His Sabbath, and His law to Israel does not mean they began then, for the Sabbath was appointed to holy use before the fall, Abraham kept His commandments, statutes and laws, Israel already knew the Sabbath before Sinai, and He is from everlasting to everlasting.

Profaning His holy name is a national sin whose guilt stands beside slavery. No people can heap scorn on His holy name and go unpunished, but will be called to account and meet a fearful reckoning when He judges nations.
