Leviticus 22:33

That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.

As Creator, God broke the power of the oppressor and brought Israel forth out of the land of Egypt after four hundred and thirty years as His peculiar treasure and hallowed people. He did this to give them His Sabbath and His law and Himself and to be their God, styling Himself the God of Israel. That bringing out of Egypt to be their God is the work recorded in the verse.

It was a formal public espousal of the people by God, and of His law and His Sabbath and Himself by the people. It was not the beginning of the Sabbath or of the law or of God Himself. The Sabbath had already been appointed to holy use before the fall, and the commandments had already been kept by Abraham and were known to Israel.

To be entrusted in this way with God Himself was an honor to Israel, just as to be entrusted with the Sabbath and the law was an honor to Israel.

That God became the God of Israel and entrusted Israel with the Sabbath and the law did not make the Law-giver or the Sabbath or the law Jewish. The Law-giver did not become Jewish by giving Himself to Israel. The Sabbath still remained the Sabbath of the Lord, and the law continued to be the law of the Most High.

God was Israel's God, but the verse does not say the law was Israel's alone. The law, including the commandment about the Sabbath, binds all people.
