Leviticus 24:10

And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

The verse opens on a quarrel that broke out inside the camp between a full Israelite man and the son of an Israelitish woman whose father was an Egyptian. The mixed-descent son had left the section of the camp assigned to those like himself and was demanding the right to pitch his tent among the Israelites proper. Standing behind the dispute was the law that barred descendants of an Egyptian from full place in the congregation until the third generation. When the judges decided against his claim, he turned in anger, reviling the judge and blaspheming the name of God. His case was then held over until divine direction could be obtained, and under that direction he was taken outside the camp and stoned. Before the sentence was carried out the witnesses laid their hands upon his head in solemn affirmation of the charge against him.
