Leviticus 25:30
And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile. And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile.
Leviticus 25:30 belongs to the Old Testament gospel, the practical missionary principles of Christianity given to the Hebrews concerning their duties to one another. The surrounding chapter presents the Lord as over the whole earth, commanding that every seventh year be kept as a sabbatical year. In that year all agricultural work and cultivation of the soil were to cease, and the land was to lie in its spontaneous growth for the benefit of the poor, with free access granted to strangers and to flocks and herds.
That sabbatical rest was appointed to rest and invigorate worn-out productive soil, and to teach that God is the Householder and owner of the land while the people are His tenants. The fiftieth year is the jubilee, appointed to teach liberality and to overcome stinginess and selfishness. It shows that the land is the Lord's and is to be regarded as His, that He will make the lands of the obedient productive by His blessing, and that He will care for the poor by special interposition through the spontaneous crops. Under God's supervision the sixth year yields provision for three years, as a constant lesson that God is Householder and the land is His. These lessons are to be brought into practical life in obedience by opening the heart to help brethren working in hard fields, instead of closing the door of the heart and refusing.
