Leviticus 25:33
And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.
Leviticus 25:33 belongs to the laws of the jubilee, part of the sabbatical and jubilee arrangements for the land. It was spoken by Christ to Moses for the children of Israel and remains binding at the present time. It teaches that the land is the Lord's and the people are only His tenants, called to treat it as His and to trust His care.
In the sabbatical pattern, the soil was left uncultivated every seventh year and its spontaneous growth was left for the poor, strangers, livestock, and other animals, while the harvest of the sixth year supplied food for three years. Through the jubilee the verse shows that God provided for the poor and cared for the land. It is part of special directions for a brother who has become poor and declined, requiring God's people to relieve him so he may continue to live with them, without charging interest or profit.
It calls for practical obedience in action and truth, generously helping the poor brother, stranger, and sojourner, and dealing justly and mercifully. Its purpose is to teach liberality rather than selfishness and to overcome stinginess. Obedience brings God's blessing on all work, while refusal and neglect is sin; when the poor cry to the Lord, prayers are rejected, prosperity may be removed, and guilt is charged against the people and especially those in responsible positions who fail to see the work done.
