Leviticus 25:40

But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:

Leviticus 25:40 belongs to the regulations governing the jubilee. Its chapter teaches that the land belongs to God and reveals His care for the poor. A Hebrew who had become a servant was to be treated as a hired worker and as a resident foreigner dwelling with his master, not held as a permanent slave.

His term of service was limited and was to come to an end at the year of jubilee. The same chapter also makes provision for the poor from what the land produces of itself during the sabbatical year. Its jubilee arrangements are meant to encourage liberality and to stand against selfishness.
