Leviticus 25:51

If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for.

Leviticus 25:51 belongs to the practical missionary instruction about duties to one another found in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, which is the gospel of the Old Testament. Its chapter ordains that every seventh year be a sabbatical year when agricultural work and cultivation of the soil cease. In that year the land lies in its spontaneous growth for the benefit of the poor, with free access for strangers, flocks, herds, and livestock.

This arrangement lets the soil rest and invigorates worn-out soil. It teaches that God is the Householder and owner of the land and the people are His tenants, with the Lord over the whole earth. The same chapter ordains the fiftieth year as the jubilee to encourage liberality, overcome stinginess, and show that the land is the Lord's. The land is productive by His blessing upon obedience, with special interposition by which in the sixth year it yields provision for three years as a constant lesson of God's ownership and care for the poor. The verse therefore requires liberality and practical obedience in helping needy brethren in hard fields instead of selfishly closing the heart to them.
