Leviticus 25:52
And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption. And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption.
The verse states the jubilee law of redemption, requiring the price to be counted and repaid according to the years still remaining until the year of jubilee. That instruction belongs to the gospel of the Old Testament and to practical missionary duties to one another found in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, given by the Lord over the whole earth as heaven-sent instruction rather than darkness. The surrounding chapter teaches that the land belonged to God as owner and Householder, while the people were only His tenants.
Every seventh year was a sabbatical year, a yearly sabbath for the land, when agricultural work and cultivation of the soil stopped and the land lay in its spontaneous growth with free access for all, including the poor, strangers, flocks, herds and livestock. That provision cared for the poor, renewed and invigorated the worn-out productive soil, and taught liberality and dependence on God's blessing. The jubilee is the fiftieth year, which taught liberality, overcame stinginess, and taught that the land is the Lord's and that He would make it productive by His blessing if the people were obedient. God showed special care for the poor by making the sixth year under His supervision yield enough to provide for three years, as a constant lesson that He is the Householder and the land is His. These lessons given to the Hebrews are to be brought into practical life and obeyed now, with hearts freed from selfish principles that would close the door when brethren working in hard fields ask for a favor.
