Leviticus 25:53

And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight.

The verse belongs to the Lord's provisions in Leviticus 25 that set out duties of one to another. It means that a brother held as a servant is to remain with his master as a yearly hired servant, and the other, the master, is not to rule with rigour, with harshness, over him in sight. It teaches that the Lord is over the whole earth, that God is the owner of the land and the Householder, and that the people are His tenants, made known by plain communication from heaven.

As part of Leviticus 25 it shows God's care for the poor and presents practical missionary work and the very principles of Christianity, the Old Testament gospel given by Christ to the Hebrews. It is to be obeyed in practical life now, requiring liberality and care for the poor and the overcoming of stinginess and selfishness. Its obedience means hearts are not closed in refusal with No when brethren laboring in hard fields ask a favor.
