Leviticus 25:54

And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.

If an Israelite servant had not been redeemed in the intervening years, he was to go out free in the year of jubilee, both he and his children with him. This direction belongs to practical instruction about duty to one another, which is practical missionary work embodying the principles of Christianity and the gospel in the Old Testament, communicated from heaven by the Lord over the whole earth.

Its setting includes the law that every seventh year is a sabbatical year, when agricultural work and cultivation of the soil are forbidden so that the land rests, with its spontaneous growth left with free access for the poor, strangers, flocks and herds, to invigorate worn-out productive soil and to teach that God is Householder and owner, the people are His tenants, and the land keeps a sabbath. The release reflects that the land is the Lord's and that God as Householder and owner takes care of the poor and has made provision for them. That provision includes the spontaneous crops every seventh year for the poor and a special interposition by which the sixth year under God's supervision is made to yield enough for three years, as a constant lesson that God is Householder and makes the land productive by His blessing when obeyed.

The fiftieth year as the year of jubilee was given to encourage liberality and to overcome stinginess and selfish principles. The instruction still requires obedience in the present age of light, by opening the heart in liberality to help brethren working in hard, poverty-stricken fields instead of closing the heart and refusing.
