Walking contrary to God means refusing His will, continuing in sin, failing to set the Lord ever before oneself, keeping truth far from the citadel of the soul, cherishing anything in mind or affections in rivalry with God, and breaking His holy law written with His finger on the two tables of stone. God's contrary dealing is judgment opposite to all He promised for obedience. Where obedience would bring rain in due season, fruitful land and trees yielding increase, threshing reaching to the vintage and the vintage to sowing, bread to the full, safe dwelling, perishing enemies, and God walking with His people as their God with His blessing and presence, disobedience brings His curse instead, including broken pride of power, heavens like iron and earth like brass, strength spent in vain, and land and trees yielding no fruit or increase.
By this contrary dealing God tests His people with adversity and works at cross-purposes with them to make them feel His displeasure, until they recognize that God is dealing with them, acknowledge their wrong, and are converted, or else they are cut off from His people. Obedience to all of God's requirements is the only safe course, whatever it costs, because those requirements are founded in love and infinite wisdom. Disobedience under this warning can bring the loss of God's favor and prosperity.
God's displeasure under this warning rests on workers whose management of His work is not according to His direction. God fulfills this warning by scattering the means of people who selfishly withhold what should support His work. Applied personally, if Bro. B walks contrary to God, God will walk contrary to him, so he must die to self, give up pride, follow God's leading, and fully consecrate himself to God's work. God will not hold guiltless anyone who does not set the Lord ever before him, but visits the iniquities of the fathers upon the children and upon the children's children unto the third and fourth generation of those who hate Him, while showing mercy unto thousands of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
