Leviticus 26:33

And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.

The verse stands as a forewarning and admonition that departure from God, walking contrary to Him, refusing to listen to Him, and persistent disobedience bring punishment. The threatened punishment is that He Himself will scatter His people among the heathen, draw out a sword after them, and leave their land desolate and their cities waste. Such judgments upon disobedience are sent so that the nations may know themselves to be but men.

Israel was finally scattered from the land of promise because of transgression in serving strange gods that were introduced through evil spirits. Behind that scattering lay Satan's cruel and malignant hatred after Canaan had become Israel's home and God's law had become the law of the land, with his determination to keep his hold on Canaan by plotting their destruction.
