Leviticus 26:40

If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;

The chapter containing the verse is given as a warning for people living at the end of the world. It should be read carefully as God's Word, which defines duty and must not be resisted through hardness of heart. The verse calls for an honest review of past wrongs without self-justification, including repentance for hardness of heart and stubbornness.

Recognizing how disobedience has provoked God and brought the loss of His favor leads to repentance. The warning applies with greater force to those with greater light than ancient Israel: obedience brings God's blessing, while persistent disobedience brings punishment. Applying the chapter in brotherly love means helping a brother become able to support himself.
