Leviticus 26:44

And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.

The words are those of Christ Himself speaking to Moses from the pillowy cloud. Their lesson is illustrated by Israel's rebellion in the wilderness and by the judgment that barred the disobedient generation from entering the promised land. As obedience brought divine favor to ancient Israel, so obedience brings blessing now, while departure from God brings punishment.

The chapter stands as an admonition for those living at the end of the world, calling them to review the past without self-justification and to repent of hardness and stubbornness of heart. Its warnings apply to God's people today, who have received greater light and are accountable for responding to it. It directs leading brethren in their dealings with every soul for whom Christ gave His life, requiring God's work to be managed according to His direction with no respect of persons, and calling for improvement and change where it is otherwise.
