Leviticus 3:13

And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about.

Leviticus 3:13 belongs to the instructions given for the peace offering. The offering was to be presented before the Lord with prayer for His acceptance and blessing, and the portion reserved for the people was to be shared together in a sacred feast. The laying of the offerer's hand upon the head of the victim signified the transfer of sin to the victim. The sacrificial ceremony was not a meaningless outward form, but was designed to represent Christ's ministry and death, with the suffering of the victim representing Christ giving Himself as a sacrifice for sin. The ceremony pointed forward to Christ's death, when the type would meet its fulfillment. When properly conducted, the service fostered true devotion, kindness, and sympathy rather than mere ceremony or self-gratification.
