Leviticus 4:17

And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the vail.

For the sin offering of an anointed priest or of the whole congregation, some of the blood was carried into the holy place, where the priest dipped his finger in it and sprinkled it seven times before the Lord in front of the veil. In that same offering the fat of the victim was burned upon the altar in the court, while its body was taken and burned outside the camp.

This sin-offering law laid a binding property claim upon Israel, requiring the sin offering in addition to the tithe and not as counted within it. It belonged to a system of systematic and regular returns demanded by God to sanctify property and keep His claims first and paramount, including trespass offerings and thank offerings, ransom for the firstborn, firstfruits of flocks and harvest, leaving the corners of fields and dropped grain for the poor, letting the land produce spontaneously for the needy every seventh year, and remitting debts every seventh year. The requirement rested upon all in proportion to what was possessed, so that the conscientious gave about one-third of all income for religious interests and the poor, besides freewill offerings for special objects such as the tabernacle and the temple. The same claim still binds Christians, so that one with ten or twenty thousand dollars must give his proportion under the tithing system and also present his sin offerings and thank offerings to God, with more required where more capital is entrusted.
