Leviticus 6:5
Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering. Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.
One who has wronged another through dishonesty or false swearing must confess the sin, restore the principal with a fifth part added to the one to whom it belongs, and bring a trespass offering to God on the day of the offering. Making that confession and restitution puts the wrong right. This repentance and restitution is tied to the hope that sins will be blotted out when the times of refreshing come and that the name will remain in the book of life.
The duty to make restitution for defrauding or injuring another also covers harm done through false witness, misstated words, or damage to reputation, requiring the person to withdraw the harmful statements from all who heard them. In one instance this applied to a woman who had taken money by a false oath and made dishonest claims about the cost of medicine, who confessed publicly and restored some of the things she had wrongfully taken. In another application, those who caused loss by spreading suspicion and distrust against the Health Retreat must turn from that course and make restitution to the one entitled, including bringing a trespass offering.
