Leviticus 8:17
But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; as the LORD commanded Moses. But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Leviticus 8:17 belongs to the consecration and ordination offerings and sacrificial duties performed before Aaron and his sons began their priestly ministry, which began the ministry of the earthly sanctuary. It records that the bullock offered in that ordination service, with its hide, its flesh, and its dung, was burned with fire outside the camp, as the Lord commanded Moses. The chapter shows Moses set apart the Levitical order of priesthood to carry forward the ministration commenced when the law was brought down. That order performed the ministration in the typical earthly sanctuary of two holy places, ministering before the ark containing the tables in the Most Holy Place while that sanctuary continued.
Its details have meaning as part of the sanctuary service, requiring spiritual application, and their fuller meaning is found in Christ's sacrifice, life, and work. As part of those sacrificial object lessons in Leviticus, the slain animals pointed forward to Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the world's sin. The Levitical priesthood offered no sacrifice that could take away sin but could only point penitent sinners forward to the great Sacrifice to be offered for the sins of men. The building, priesthood, yearly services, and earthly ministration of the Levitical sanctuary service were types, the example and shadow, of Christ's priesthood and more excellent ministry and service in the heavenly sanctuary, the true tabernacle.
