Leviticus 8:26

And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:

Leviticus 8:26 belongs to the account of the consecration and dedication of the priests, one of the book's few historical episodes, describing an offering made during that ceremony and part of the sanctuary service at their dedication within the sacrificial rites set forth in the first eight chapters of Leviticus. It records part of Aaron's solemn seven-day consecration, in which Moses took three kinds of unleavened bread — one unleavened cake, a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer — from the basket that was before the LORD and put them on the fat and upon the right shoulder as Aaron was set apart for God's service.

The chapter shows Moses setting apart the Levitical order of priesthood to carry forward the ministration begun when he brought the law down, performing that ministration in the earthly sanctuary with its two holy places before the ark containing the tables in the Most Holy Place of the typical sanctuary while that sanctuary continued, as the example and shadow of Christ's more excellent ministry in the true tabernacle. That Levitical ministration, including its sacrificial and priestly details, served as an object lesson about the sinfulness of sin, for in itself it could only exhibit the guilt, condemnation, and death of sinful people under the law with no promise of pardon, since the priesthood appointed there offered no sacrifice that could take away sin.

Like the other sacrificial details in Leviticus, the details of this verse had meaning and find their fuller, symbolic meaning in Jesus Christ, with the sacrifices pointing forward to him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world and to his sacrifice, life, and work. The services of the Levitical sanctuary served as a type of Christ and his priesthood in the heavenly sanctuary, and could only point penitent sinners forward to the great Sacrifice to be offered for the sins of men.
