Luke 1:27

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Luke 1:27 belongs to the angel's announcement to Mary at Nazareth, identifying Joseph and Mary as living there and as known to be the earthly parents of Jesus. In the councils of heaven Mary was chosen to be the mother of the Redeemer as a pure and pious virgin, poor in earthly riches and espoused to Joseph the carpenter. The home chosen for the child was the despised village of Nazareth.

From the time she heard the announcement, Mary treasured up evidence that Jesus was the Messiah. Joseph shared her knowledge of the mystery of Jesus' birth. Christ, who had directed that every youth in Israel should learn a trade, Himself learned the carpenter's trade and for thirty years was subject to His parents, helping by the labor of His hands to sustain the family. This lowly birth and upbringing teaches that none need be ashamed of honest poverty, that labor is not degradation but honor, and that it is every person's duty to engage in useful, honorable work.
