Luke 10:23

And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

Turning privately to His disciples after the seventy returned from their mission, He pronounced them blessed for what their eyes were permitted to behold. He spoke it in the hour He rejoiced in spirit and thanked the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the wise and prudent and revealing them to babes, while declaring that all things are delivered to Him and no one knows the Son but the Father nor the Father except those to whom the Son reveals Him. His rejoicing was over the progress of the Gospel and the adding of souls to be saved, for nothing so rejoices His heart as the conversion of souls from sin to holiness. The blessed sight is the truth and work of Christ then revealed firsthand, the revelation and knowledge of God through Him present among them as the promised Messiah, truly human yet Creator and equal with the Father, a privilege not merely of witnessing signs but of receiving that light to be advanced. What they saw and heard many prophets and kings and righteous men desired to see and hear without seeing or hearing them, for those substantial truths were hidden from those reaching for the highest sophistry and education. Those who saw were commissioned to tell the world that heaven's Majesty had taken humanity, to advance that light in other parts of the world and make known Christ's soon coming and the final message of mercy, holding fast the beginning of confidence firm to the end.

Setting and Meaning

He turned to His disciples privately to pronounce them blessed for what their eyes were permitted to behold. The blessing was spoken after the seventy returned from their mission. It was spoken while He looked upon His frowning enemies, who were so filled with wrath that if they had dared they would have killed Him then and there.

It was spoken in the hour He rejoiced in spirit and thanked the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the wise and prudent and revealing them to babes. In that same hour He declared that all things are delivered to Him and no one knows the Son but the Father nor the Father except those to whom the Son reveals Him. His rejoicing of spirit was over the progress of the Gospel and the adding of souls to the church to be saved, for nothing rejoices His heart so much. The conversion of souls from sin to holiness is His joy, a full joy even in the converting of one soul.

The blessed sight is the truth and work of Christ then revealed, the truths and works of Jesus witnessed firsthand. It is the revelation of God and the knowledge of God through Him, and the privilege was not merely witnessing signs, but receiving the revelation of God through Christ. That light and truth is to be advanced. The disciples were blessed to see by faith the promised Messiah present among them, revealing Jesus as the Lord of glory, truly human yet the Creator and equal with the Father. Those substantial truths were revealed to babes while hidden from the wise and prudent and from those reaching for the highest sophistry and education.

Prophecy and Privilege

Many prophets and kings, and righteous men, longed to see the things the disciples were seeing and to hear the things they were hearing, yet they did not see them and did not hear them. The disciples were therefore pronounced blessed in private for what their eyes were permitted to behold and their ears to hear. Their privilege was not merely watching signs, but receiving the revelation of God through Christ in the truths and works of Jesus then made manifest. They were blessed to see by faith the promised Messiah present among them as the Lord of glory, truly human yet the Creator and equal with the Father. That sight was given to babes while hidden from the wise and prudent.

The prophets foretold these things yet were not given the privilege to understand what they foretold. The mysteries that angels desire to look into are now carried to the world by the remnant church in messages from God. The desire of prophets and kings and righteous men will be fulfilled when Christ comes the second time, when, surrounded by a multitude that no one can number, He will make all known by explaining the deliverance accomplished through the great sacrifice He made.

The same blessing rests on the eyes that saw the things seen in 1843 and 1844, for the message was then given. That same message must be repeated without delay, because the signs of the times are fulfilling and the closing work must be done. A great work will be done in a short time, and a message given by God's appointment will soon swell into a loud cry, and then Daniel will stand in his lot to give his testimony.

Commission and Application

Those who were blessed to see were commissioned to tell the world what they had seen and heard, that heaven's Majesty had taken humanity. The light and truth thus seen is to be advanced in other parts of the world. The church is entrusted to make known these truths, including the message of Christ's soon coming and the third angel's message, the final message of mercy to the world. Seeing those truths calls for holding fast the beginning of confidence firm to the end.

The verse stands within teaching on the most important question ever presented to human minds, wanted by youngest to oldest, what to do to inherit eternal life. That teaching is described as the highest science or higher education and as Christ's recipe for convicted souls, to be read and used for the necessities of the present time. In answer to that question, God is not to be loved with only a quarter of the heart while the rest is given to the world, but with all the heart, and the neighbor as self, and this whole love is life that runs parallel with the life of Jehovah. That teaching calls for using every God-given talent for His glory.

That recipe calls for shortcomings to be seen, repented of and acknowledged, for Jesus to fill thought and longing and intense desire, and for faith to be exercised in works, instead of long discourses that put the crib too high. God's people have a serious work before them requiring the whole being, heart, mind, soul and strength, in His service. That work must not be confined to believers but must seek acquaintance with unbelievers, placing the truth before those living up to all the light they have and reaching precious souls such as those in the city of Melbourne. For loving God with all the heart means loving those for whom He gave His only begotten Son, since Christ died to redeem human beings from sin, and He has set before His workers an open door through which to bring others into fellowship with the saints.
