Luke 10:6

And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

After sending the twelve, Jesus sent the seventy two by two ahead of Him into every city and place He would visit, to awaken interest and proclaim that the kingdom of God is come nigh to the whole world until it is reached. They were given power to preach the word and to heal the sick and cast out evil spirits, showing that teaching and healing are never to be separated, and they were to enter each house with a greeting of peace. The son of peace is one there who is receptive and welcomes the messengers and their message, and where such a one is found the peace spoken rests upon the household, but where there is none it returns to those who offered it, helping them discern where to give their time so labor is not wasted. That appointment is the commission for gospel medical missionary evangelists now, with little companies to go at once into the great centers without waiting years, because doors now open will soon be forever closed. The work calls for the whole being with great ingenuity and tenderness that wins hearts, scattering publications, speaking the truth, praying for the sick and ministering with nature's remedies, and treating every person including bitter opponents with respect as a neighbor.

Seventy’s Commission and Setting

After the sending of the twelve, Jesus sent out the seventy two by two before Him into every city and place where He Himself would come. Their going before Him was to awaken interest and prepare the people to receive the grand truths He would impart, with Christ Himself to follow afterward in every place where they were sent. To the seventy He gave the same first directions He had given the twelve when He first sent them out. That sameness shows His original plan that gospel work is not to be begun and carried forward by one man entirely alone, but where possible different gifts in other laborers are to gladly cooperate together for the conversion of souls. His example in this sending was to bring men in and place them in responsibilities to go everywhere preaching the kingdom of God and the gospel of truth.

The burden of their message, to be kept always in view from city to city, was that the kingdom of God is come nigh. They carried that kingdom message from city to city as they went. That proclamation was not limited to the Jews but extended to the whole world. The work of carrying the message is to continue until the world has been reached.

They were sent to preach the word and minister to the sick, to preach the gospel and heal the sick while proclaiming the kingdom of God at hand. Power was given them to heal the sick and cast out evil spirits. In this their preaching and healing work belonged together, showing that in God's work teaching and healing are never to be separated. The sending was to gather a harvest already white, and that same harvest work was taken up at Pentecost when three thousand souls were added.

Peace Promise and Method

The messengers were to enter a house with a greeting of peace. The son of peace is a person there who is receptive and open to peace, who receives the message and welcomes the messengers. Where such a welcome was given, the household's reception and support helped the disciples discern where to give their time and instruction, so their labor would not be wasted.
If such a person is there, the peace spoken over the household rests upon it, and if not, that peace returns to those who offered it. It was a blessing for a receptive household, resting there if the household welcomed them and returning to the disciples if it did not.

They were to teach from the Old Testament by explaining the prophecies of the mission and work of Christ. In doing so they were to present truths that would soften hearts to receive Christ when He followed afterward. They were not to turn aside into controversy over unessential matters that would close the door.

Present Work and Urgency

The instructions given for that sending show how to labor in the great centers now, with strong men to be appointed to work in the cities and many young men and women associated with them to labor in a humble manner in harmony with those instructions, a work necessary in that time and even more necessary now. The appointment of disciples to go forth in little companies as evangelists is the commission for gospel medical missionary evangelists now. Those little companies must carry the message at once without spending years in preparation, because doors now open to the truth will soon be forever closed and the enemy will take possession of open fields if they wait.

The work appointed for them is to scatter publications, talk of the truth to those they meet, pray for the sick, minister to their necessities with nature's remedies and not with drugs, and teach them how to regain health and avoid disease. It is a serious work lying before God's people and requiring the whole being, heart, mind, soul, and strength in His service. That labor is not to be confined to believers, but workers are to become acquainted with unbelievers, placing truth before those living up to all the light they have, and loving with all the heart those for whom God gave His Son to redeem from sin, since an open door is set before His people to bring others into fellowship, including precious souls such as those in Melbourne.

Carrying the message until the world has been reached requires treating everyone, including bitter opponents, with respect as a neighbor. The city work requires great ingenuity in presenting the words of eternal life so souls are reached and converted. It requires thoroughly converted workers who present the Word of truth in a spirit of tenderness that will win hearts.
