Luke 11:27

And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

Luke 11:27 belongs to the opening portion of Luke 11, a section that begins with instruction on prayer, continues with a miracle of casting out evil spirits, and includes solemn warnings spoken against the Pharisees. Within that setting a certain woman in the company lifted up her voice to bless Jesus by blessing the mother who bore him and nursed him.

Jesus answered by directing attention away from that earthly relationship to the greater blessing of hearing the word of God and keeping it. In this redirection praise is moved from natural kinship to obedience, showing that hearing and keeping God's word is the higher blessedness. The exchange thus establishes that obedience to God forms a spiritual family, whose bonds may take precedence over earthly ties when those ties would draw a person away from following God's will.
