Luke 11:34

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

The saying about the single eye was uttered amid stern denunciations and woes against oppression and wrongdoing, and those rebukes gave way as the end of the mission drew near to deepest sorrow and weeping over Jerusalem, whose probation was about to close after three years of seeking fruit and of labor with solemn warnings and gracious invitations to recognize the promised Messiah and only hope, which the thankless, disobedient people would not receive. To have the eye single is to have it single to the glory of God and to serve Him with the heart's best and holiest affections. Spiritual perception turns on the condition of the eye, for when the eye is single the whole body is full of light, but when the eye is evil the body is full of darkness.

Therefore heed must be taken that the light within is not darkness, and the light received is to be lifted up openly to give light, so that a body wholly full of light with no dark part becomes wholly light as under a bright shining candle. Undivided trust in the Lord and following of Christ as the light of the world brings the promise of full spiritual light, so that those who trust Him with all the heart do not walk in darkness but have the light of life, a promise proved true by lifelong experience from eleven years old onward in casting the helpless soul upon the One who purchased it with His own blood. God justly requires rational, accountable persons to walk in the light shining upon them according to the grace and truth given them, fully meeting all His righteous requirements and exhibiting union and oneness with Christ in character and works in accordance with sacred truth.

If persons refuse to be led by truth that has reached the understanding and illuminated the soul, their light becomes darkness, and that darkness, with the judgment and condemnation at the last day, is in proportion to the amount of light received. Condemnation comes not from lack of knowledge and understanding but from turning away from light given, for light never possessed never becomes darkness, and if blind there would be no sin, but where great light has been given and sacred truth unfolded there is responsibility to advance in knowledge and true holiness. Cherished idols and wrongdoing that separate persons from God leave many in spiritual darkness and unable to recognize their condition, while only a few have the discernment and spirituality to see and remove the stumbling blocks.
