Luke 11:48

Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

Christ spoke these words to the Pharisees and lawyers. By building tombs and monuments to honor the murdered prophets and messengers while sharing the murderous spirit of the fathers who killed them, that generation bore witness that it approved its fathers' deeds. This conduct reveals a distinguishing feature of false religion.

Outwardly honoring the slain messengers did not mean accepting God's message, but exposed continued rebellion in opposing the Holy Spirit speaking through God's servants. The verse rebukes those who set themselves up as judges and censors over those moved by the Holy Spirit while themselves failing to keep God's law. The same contrast applies to those who praise dead prophets while persecuting and rejecting God's living messengers sent in their own time.
